New Roads conducts a two-phase program that serves probation youth both in camp and as they transition from camp back into the community.
The In Camp Phase includes an array of promising and proven practices geared to enhance educational attainment, social skills, and coping skills among incarcerated youth. About 60 days prior to release, all youth who participate in the program are enrolled in Reentry academy. Students learn practical skills that will prepare them for their transition back into the community and by connecting them with jobs, school programs, or other community resources, as needed. They also receive emotional preparation for reintegrating with family and peers. The Reentry academy reduces the abrupt transition that many youth face when they leave a secure setting and return to their former homes and communities.
The Reentry Phase consists of individually tailored transition and aftercare services to help youth integrate their new skills and goals back into back into their school, community, peer, and family contexts. Community reentry begins in the Reentry Academy and continues with aftercare services for 30 days after release. During this phase, the focus is to ensure that the participating youth meets the terms of his probation by placing him in a suitable school or vocational training program, connecting him with jobs or youth employment centers, and/or other community resources to minimize chances of recidivating.
