Edwin Rivas

Edwin Rivas was in and out of probation camps since the age of 13.   During his stay at Camp Gonzalez, Edwin joined the New Roads for New Visions  program and became active in the newspaper class where his interest in writing led him to become the chief editor. During the newspaper classes and mentoring sessions, Edwin identified his main challenges with staying out of jail—his gang affiliation and drug addiction. In order to address these challenges, he agreed to relocate and     attend a private boarding school in Colorado, Eagle Rock School, where he could disconnect from his neighborhood gang while staying clean of drugs. Edwin     graduated from Eagle Rock School and is now a New Roads for New Visions intern, attending college to reach a career in social services.

Adam Hernandez

Adam struggled with drugs for most of his teenage years. At the age of 18, Adam was sentenced to Camp Gonzales where he became active with Camp Community Partners, participating in yoga, animation, soccer, and the GED preparation. As he neared his release date, Adam worked with his counselor from Camp Community Partners to prepare a transition plan that included consistent participation in Narcotics Anonymous meetings and a vocational program. After his release, Adam was accepted into Job Corps, and successfully graduated one year later. He remains sober to this day and has made education his focus. He has attended Los Angeles Valley College for the past three years. His future goals include receiving an AA degree, transferring to a four-year college and one day returning to become a counselor for probation youth. Adam is currently scheduled to start Nursing School at Valley College for the Fall 2009.
