A former resident of Lennox, Ms. Emerald has worked for over twenty years to improve conditions for underrepresented communities throughout the city. Her love affair with public service began as an undergraduate at UCLA where she created an adult literacy program at the Watts Library. This pilot project won her recognition from the City of Los Angeles. This launched Anna’s career in community-based education. Ms. Emerald worked at the Fulfillment Fund for three years before returning to graduate school at Teachers College, Columbia University where she obtained a Masters of Art degree in Curriculum and Teaching. Upon her return to Los Angeles, she joined Community Partners as Program Director for two years before going on to work at CompassLearning, a web-based educational software company as an Educational Consultant. During her four and half years at CompassLearning, Anna trained teachers on the use of academic software and technology integration strategies for the classroom.
Ms. Emerald joins New Visions Foundation with a range of experience from developing new and exciting educational programs for professional development in New York to promoting independent documentaries in Los Angeles. While at Teachers College, she piloted a hybrid online and in-person facilitated learning community for professionals in the afterschool sector. She collaborated with professors from Harvard, Columbia, and other local New York universities to customize the online sessions based on immediate participants’ needs. In Los Angeles, Ms. Emerald worked on marketing and outreach for The Lost Village of Terminal Island, a documentary on the Japanese-American experience of life in the Port of Los Angeles.
Ms. Emerald has worked with diverse audiences including city and government officials, community leaders, and business professionals from various sectors. Ms. Emerald has also worked with non-profit organizations to create and implement educational programs and workshops and outreach campaigns for Workplace Hollywood, the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, and the Low Income Investment Fund. Additionally, she was a charter member of the City of Alhambra's Arts and Culture Events Committee and served for 7 years.
