For her whole career, Tonica Lucas has worked in the nonprofit and government sectors – providing services and acquiring attention for the communities that need it most. A University of Nevada Las Vegas graduate with degrees in Communication Studies and Workforce Education, she has dedicated herself to the betterment of the underserved.
As an AmeriCorps*VISTA, Tonica was stationed at The Salvation Army Las Vegas where she served as the Marketing and Development Coordinator. Her main mission there was to raise awareness for the homeless population. In this position, she created partnerships with local colleges and casino corporations to institute an apprenticeship program for homeless men.
Ms. Lucas has also worked for the city of Las Vegas as a Public Information Specialist – coordinating all special events for the Mayor, City Council and City Manager’s Office – acting as a liaison to all media outlets. She was also responsible for handling all publicity and marketing for the Office of Government & Community Affairs.
Since then, Tonica has worked with some of the top nonprofit organizations in California to restructure their messaging, advocate and community organize, coordinate fundraising efforts and develop communication/marketing plans. Through communications, Ms. Lucas has organized groups of constituents to speak at legislative hearings at the state capital, given trainings to over 300 community members on how to advocate on social justice issues, and created overall awareness to the issues that face varying communities. Tonica also has a graduate certificate in marketing strategy for business leaders from Cornell University.
As Director of Communications & Marketing for New Visions, Tonica oversees all marketing for the organization – assuring that the message of NV’s mission is clear and concise while bringing awareness to education reform and educational justice to at-risk children, youth, and communities.
