Federal Loans (low-interest loans, which must be paid back over time)
Some scholarships, to which foster youth can apply:
- Change a Life Foundation
- Horatio Alger Scholarship
- Orphan Foundation Scholarship
- Darko Rapotez Memorial College Scholarship Fund For Aged Out Foster Youth
- United Friends of the Children College Sponsorship Program
Tips:
- Fill out the FAFSA well before the deadline.

- Do not apply to scholarships that require a fee to apply.
- Federal student loans have very low interest rates and are a common way to fund a college education. Beware of private loans, however, as interest rates and payment options will vary widely.
- Talk to everyone you know about your search for scholarships and funding-you might learn important information from your peers and other adults.
- If you are already enrolled in college, you may still be eligible to apply for certain scholarships. If you need additional funding, keep looking!
- Call the financial aid office and ask about funding opportunities and options.
- Call the Student Services or Student Affairs offices on your college list and inquire about programs that support former foster youth under served youth.
